The Requirement

As QHSE Manager/SI you will provide expert ongoing advice on all QHSE matters, playing a key role in actively promoting and enforcing the company safety culture and standards aboard all vessels and offices. Key responsibilities and Primary Deliverables: 

Safety Management

  • Identify and lead safety initiatives and improvements to enhance fleet safety.
  • Provide credible advice to all relevant departments and management.
  • Ensure assigned vessels are compliant with maritime legislation, Flag State requirements and quality and safety standards of the vessel owners.
  • Review, address and respond to safety related matters in vessels including SQSE meetings, Masters review, injury and incident reports and near miss reporting.
  • Carry out performance evaluations related to safety matters for Senior Officers on board assigned vessels.
  • Review, maintain and improve the company safety management including producing revisions, amendments and new procedures. Areas include safety and environmental related matters and navigation


  • Formulate and distribute safety information, updates and safety campaigns to the fleet and departments.
  • Promptly and professionally respond to messages from vessels, Class, Flag States, service providers and manning agents.
  • Recognised as an expert advisor on all safety matters and to maintain open communications with all departments, offices, vessels and external quality departments.

Audit Management

  • Review and monitor internal audits, internal navigational audits, Master’s Navigation Audits and third-party external audits providing close out actions where necessary.
  • When required, conduct office audits and vessel inspections to ensure the vessels are compliant and maintain applicable ISO standards.
  • Plan and arrange fleet audit schedule as required as per applicable intervals.
  • Collate and maintain database of audit findings for identifying trends and analysis. Monitor the travelling auditors to ensure KPIs are being met.

Vessel Attendance

  • Attending ships as and when required.

Analysis and Reports

  • Analyse Near Misses data and identify areas of improvement and provide suggestions to improve safety management on board and in the office.
  • Investigate injuries and incidents, identify causal analysis and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Analyse injuries and incident reports, identify all high levels of risk and prepare Incident letters or safety bulletins as required with learnings from incidents to share with the fleet.
  • Support the department in the analysis of injuries and incidents as well as the preparation of fleet Safety circular letters.
  • Accurate and timely registration, tracking and reporting of deficiencies on QMS including monthly summaries, trends and close out reminders.

Data Management and Documentation

  • Effective administration of various documents and databases.
  • Administer and maintain Ship Security Alert System. Annual testing of all the SSAS units within the fleet & maintaining proper records of the equipment.
  • Maintaining accurate records of safety and environmental data, produce quantifiable results of the company’s safety and environmental impacts and maintain data for key performance indicators.
  • Advise and assist with ISM / ISPS compliance, regulations and updates if any.
  • Prepare and maintain ISPS documentation such as SSP’s, SSA’s, and OSSS’s.
  • Prepare manuals and documentation for vessels entering the management, new building and conversions.
  • Administer changes to company systems to ensure effective management systems are maintained.
  • Assist with the preparation of Management Reports.


  • Carry out briefing, training and familiarisation of ship staff; Masters, Chief Engineers, C/O and 1/E.
  • Prepare and conduct webinars on identified topics.
  • United Kingdom Legal and Administrative Procedures (UKLAP) training of Masters.
  • Asist in the development and presentation of relevant QHSE training.

Emergency Response Procedures

  • Participate in emergency response and assist the emergency / crisis management team.

More about you

Relevant experience


  • Seafaring experience: Master Mariner with Master or Chief Engineer sailing experience or a shipping related degree and equivalent shore-based experience of minimum 10 years.
  • Onshore experience within QHSE / Marine Superintendent would be advantageous.
  • Lead Auditor Qualification would be an advantage for this role.
  • Familiarisation with applicable ISM and ISO standards and codes is a requirement for this role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of ECDIS.
  • Strong background in marine safety.
  • Experience as an Auditor carrying out shipboard audits to ISM/ISO and ISPS Standards would be an advantage.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of ship management, operations and its QA systems.
  • Strong IT skills
  • Good command of both written and spoken English.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to apply sound commercial judgement.
  • Highly effective at building and sustaining relationships at multiple levels throughout a global organisation. Comfortable operating in a multicultural environment.
  • High level of analytical skills and strategic thinking ability to support decisions with sound reasoning and judgement.
  • Strong focus on delivering quality and meeting deadlines. Successful track record in dealing with a broad set of activities within a fast-paced environment, whilst managing pressure well.
  • Flexibility in working hours as you will be required to respond to messages outside of normal working hours.
